Redesign Legacy Offline-Refresh on NAWS (CDK, Java)
• Overview: perform an “Offline Refresh” (1.4-1.8 million checks per hour) to trigger a refresh for all Business/Enterprise customers automatically.
• Wrote a design document and held a team review
• Workflow: build the functionality within Native AWS using a CDK pipeline from scratch
• Extracted the s3 file containing account-id and check-id using Jackson-dataformat-csv
• Built a step function to recursively call lambda to read s3 file and emit refreshes using Java and Typescript o Used Dagger and Lombok to make code cleaner and simpler
• Launcher (lambda): Start the workflow on the upload of a new S3 file
• Change the S3file-reading mode from reading by lines to reading by bytes using S3 Select and SQL expression, so that the step function could read large files in short time (increase scalability).
• Added Unit Tests to 80% coverage to be ready for production using Mockito
• Built a MetricsFactory to be ready for adding alerts in the future
• Learnt how to add Pause/Restarting the offline-refresh and write Mechanic Scripts
File System Crawler, Indexer, Search Engine (C, C++, GDB debugger, Valgrind)
• Parsed the text file and built up a HashTable that contains FNV64(word) as key and a LinkedList containing an offset within the file that the word appeared in as value
• Built a file system crawler that looks through the directory and subdirectories and adds to two HashTables that map from docID to document filename and from document filename to docID
• Built the indexer that takes each word hashtable and fold its content into an inverted index
• Built a query processor that receives queries from a user, and return a list of matching documents containing all query words and their offset position in the corresponding document, sorted by the total number of times each query word appears in the document
• Built an in-memory index of file subtree and write index into an index file using C++, and constructed readers to read an index file and look up query words
• Built a multi-threaded web server, which first created a listening socket, and then sits in a loop waiting to accept new connections from clients. For each
new connection that the server receives, it dispatches a thread from a ThreadPool class to handle the connection. Use HTTP to receive requests and send
responses.

• Created a generic graph ADT, used collections and key-value structures as fundamental data structures storing locations and path between them
• Found the quickest path from two buildings on UW campus using Dijkstra’s algorithm and other sorting algorithms
